Hi, my name is
Julie Berube
Why am I joining Hope on the Horizon?
I met one of the Catholic Street Missionaries staff members in her travels and was struck by her love for those on the streets. But it was more than that.
She thought of them as equals and genuinely wanted to be around them as her friends.
God has blessed me with a gift of compassion for people in their struggles, no matter what stage or path in life they are on, but sometimes I have been held back by fear and discouragement because I don’t know how I can help them get out of their problems. I am inspired by the way that Catholic Street Missionaries approaches ministry as just simple interactions that give vision and hope, without trying to take on responsibility for the sufferings of others. I am very excited to experience simple friendship with those who previously made me nothing but uncomfortable. And I know that this experience will give me more insight into the lives of others and empower my intercession.
More about me!
I am from Edmonton, Alberta, and in the past several years I have been able to travel (or “province-hop”) around four of the provinces of Canada for school, work, and other exciting adventures, creating homes and deep friendships wherever I go. I now feel like I have many, many homes where my heart is. Going to Vancouver for the Hope on the Horizon program is all part of the adventure for me because it is a way to experience God’s voice in prayer and the beauty of creation while also giving myself to a mission that I believe in.
Wherever I go, I enjoy spending time working and relaxing with my large family and beautiful friends, as well as singing, praying, reading, gardening, and creating beautiful moments by making delicious homemade meals and other treats.
For three years I attended St. Therese Institute of Faith and Mission in Bruno, Saskatchewan. The first two years were full of faith studies and rich formation, and the last one was because I wanted to give back in practical service so that others could have the same experience I had.
I see the Hope on the Horizon program as another way of giving back for the abundance God has given me.
